Fighting your inner critic. How to change our internal dialogue

Fighting your inner critic. How to change our internal dialogue

If the concept of constantly fighting your inner critic sounds familiar, welcome to the club!

It is part of the human experience.  Although it depends on the sensitivities and life experiences, it is always present.

What do I mean when I talk about our inner critic?  Well, I’m talking about that voice that takes away our hope, that says "why try if nothing ever works out for me" or "I'm never going to be able to do it".  It is also that small particle that is part of us and always leans towards the deepest abyss, which feels more comfortable in a situation that is not ideal or is directly toxic for us.

There is a fear around the concept of “everything going well and finally being happy”, we identify so much with the search and the feeling of needing something more, that many times when we reach that victory we are so empty and tired that it turns out to be worse than having nothing.

For this reason, along the way to find ourselves, to achieve our dreams or to take care of our jobs or loved ones, we must not forget to pay attention to ourselves, remind ourselves of who we are, give ourselves credit for everything we do and create spaces of emptiness and expansion, of fun and selfcare.

When we are in the middle of our daily drama, the bills, finding the perfect house, perfect clothes, complaining about our partners or the lack of them, about the stress of taking care of the house and working at the same time and so on. Is in this special moment when the internal critic finds the way to invade us with doubts and insecurities, "Will I do it right?"  "Have I done it right?"  "I have spoken very little" "I have spoken too much" "everything is going wrong and I don't even have food in the fridge" all those small negative thoughts can evolve into more complex issues if we don't stop them in time they will transform into "I don't do anything right" "I'm a bad person" and the classic "my life doesn't make sense".

The good news is that there is a magic trick to intimidate that invasive internal narrator.

It is a very basic thing, so basic that I’m 100% sure you already have heard about it hundreds of times.

The magic trick I'm referring to is Positive Affirmations, yes, I know… how horrible!

I know you probably heard so much about this you already despise it, and you may think  “again with the affirmations?”.  But there is something that we must take into account and that is, if there are so many people talking about the miracles that this brings, maybe it might work...

I was on the team that rejected it for a long time until I thought “maybe…” And since the moment I created space for it, everything changed :)

I will explain to you my process since it is a little more elaborate than repeating pre-designed affirmations.

When I tried the affirmations the first time I realised that I did not connect with the ideas because the phrases that I found on the internet, or in the tea packets, are pre-designed phrases and belong to other people, with them I did not reverse what I thought instead I added one more thought to the list.

Here you have my recipe to change your mind:

  • Write a list with all the negative thoughts that are travelling through your mind at the moment, try to make them short sentences, two lines at most, write the list until you feel is enough.  There are two things that can happen, one being that at first it is difficult for you to start writing but slowly all the sentences flow as if you were opening the imaginary box in which they were hidden, or thew other possibility is that at the beginning all the sentences start flowing easily through your mind and the speed at which they occur to you fades away slowly. Stop writing when you feel that It is enough, it can be 3 sentences or 100, there is no perfect number.
  • Go working in small groups max. of six sentences to not saturate yourself, choose the six phrases that you feel resonate more intense for you right now.
  • One by one transform these sentences to positive, with positive we are Not talking about "everything is wrong" ->"everything is perfect", search within that emotion with tenderness and understanding, "everything is wrong" would become "I am In constant learning, each failure has a lesson and with that I grow and I accept myself”
  • Read those phrases every day until they stop resonating for you, be very strict with this, make sure you read them. The thing that works better for me is that I put reminders on my phone with the sentences, so there is no option for me to forget. But should find the way that works for you :)  Is not necessary to pay attention when you read them, there will be days when you read them while you're on the subway or preparing breakfast and it will seems like you're not paying attention, it doesn't matter, it's a message for your unconscious mind, your conscious self doesn't have to process it in that moment.
  •  Once those phrases stop resonating to you, repeat the exercise and add another six.

I started working with this technique after reading The Artist's Way a couple of years ago, and have continued to practice it every day since.

The change in your conscious mind is gradual but powerful,

I hope it helps you a lot.

Write your experience in the comments, have you done this before?  Do you have any other tips that have helped you?

No me importa, probadlo y luego hablamos :)
