How I changed my relationship with Social Media

Yesterday I was reading a post that Vanja Vukelić wrote on her new website The Meadow, the post was called “Soul over brand: Navigating Social Media as an Artist”, what she wrote reminded me how interconnected we are since my last weeks were dedicated to review and transform my relationship with social media and very specifically with Instagram.

Since some years ago my relationship with Instagram has been transformed, mostly against my will, which has meant a turmoil inside and then outside.

But just as we have transformed over the years, the platform did the same, and what at one time was a safe space for many, in which to be able to share our perceptions of existence and our artistic creations, gradually transmuted until becoming a place that is home to 1,336 million users, and in which it often seems that everyone is speaking at the same time.

I fought this change internally for a long time, always hoping that maybe the app would be restored and will go back to the way it was before.

Like many independent artists in the early years of Instagram I found the freedom to "finally" be able to do what I wanted without depending on galleries, companies, etc. They were very beautiful years in which I was able to share my work freely and connect with many more people than I ever imagined I would connect with.

But the change came and once it was accepted and after allowing myself a period of mourning, I realised that one of the things that made me reject the situation in that app the most was not only its algorithms and attempts to keep us addicted as users, but also also the appearance of new concepts such as "Content Creator", concepts with which I never felt nor will I feel represented, this affected me when sharing my work in a place that right now houses such a large and diverse audience . And yet I continued to depend on Instagram to survive.

This placed me against my principles at many times, so I decided to stop fighting the app and start playing with it, but above all, always taking into account my own thinking, my needs and my emotions.

My first step in regaining my power and autonomy was to eliminate the need to use my cell phone as a distraction in public places, while waiting or in empty moments in my life.

Those moments are mine and I want to win them back.

To achieve this, I deleted all the social media from my phone, including YouTube, as you know, they have included Shorts and it is very easy to fall into a vortex of meaningless videos in there.

At first I was able to leave the apps installed on my iPad and only use them during work, but over time I realized that I was getting into those vortexes from my iPad too so I made the decision to remove them from there as well.

My current relationship with social networks like TikTok, Instagram or Youtube only occurs during working hours and at a specific time when I am making a post, the rest of the time they remain uninstalled.

During my time on those social media, I regularly made posts and I continue to share my work as I normally would, but now emphasising all the ways to contact me.

I dedicate time to answer messages and communicate that I am taking longer periods of time off those apps so people know that they can contact me via email without any problem and that I am still available for them.

This gesture, which may seem extreme to many and small to others, meant a world for the battery of my phone and for my internal battery.

All those empty spaces were filled with writing, reading, contemplation, meditation, calls to friends and moments of connection with myself.

This new way of using social media allows me very long periods of time without exposing myself to things I don’t want to or choose to while I continue to use them as a tool to share my work.

*Positive things about uninstalling the app outside working hours:

  1. We do not fall into immediate interaction, instead we will allow ourselves to rest after sharing our work.
  2. We will let go of the constant counting of Likes and visits.
  3. We will create a real space outside of work, nobody likes to take their work home.
  4. We will take care of our mental and emotional health by not exposing ourselves to so many stimuli.

I hope this post inspires you to look for new ways to connect through social media and to respect your physical and energetic spaces :)

If you have already discovered your way to connect in a healthy way in those spaces please share it in the comments so you can inspire other people to do the same.

Sending you Love and Light,

Carmen

    Carmen

    • I can relate very much and you succinctly touched on all the main and most important aspects of this subject. I’ve been following someone called Cal Newport who talks about digital minimalism and has books on it and an interesting Youtube channel. He’s quite extreme in his views and encourages others to not be on any social media networks at all. I’ve not found this so easy as an artist though so, like you, i’m experimenting with ways to still use the platform for it’s benefits but mindfully and in a more empowered and conscious way. I’ve recently looked at using Planable, the social media management tool, so i don’t even have to go onto Instagram to actually post, so i’ll see how that feels once i try it. I think this is all important stuff to be discussing and experimenting with : ) Thank you for your words and for your beautiful, breathtaking artwork x much love x Elyse
