“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself;
I am immense, I contain multitudes”
- Walt Whitman

About seven or eight years ago, I was interviewed by a friend for a magazine. We met at my house to have a tea and chat for three or four hours while our conversation was recorded.

I don't know with what divine patience she managed to make sense to my three-hour rambling, she decided to lead the interview with this iconic quote from Walt Whitman. Months later, when I read the interview, I realised how much she really knew me, because I had never felt so seen in a few words.

I guess that was one of the moments when I decided to start to feel comfortable in my volatile and changing mind, to allow myself to transform, to learn and change my opinions.

It also makes sense on my path to understand creativity that I always wanted to be a hippie but very inconsequentially ended up being a workaholic.

Victim of myself, I like to call it.

Among all this, when I began to understand that something was not working in my way of seeing my existence and, well, existing in general, I devoted myself to looking for magic formulas to solve my problems, options that could offer me everything that I claimed here and now.

On the internet we can find countless reflections on the relationship between creativity and productivity; texts that tell us about their incompatibility and others that give us tricks to make them compatible, ideas on the importance of expressing our creativity, or articles that tell us how important is to exploit our creativity to be more productive.

It seems that the human being is really focus on getting the most out of life to the last drop.

In this rush to get everything, we forget what is the most powerful message that creativity has for us, and that is that it has the ability to be a window overlooking the most basic of human existence, a memory of a life outside systems, money, addictions , fame,... reminds us that we are a channel, that when we let that force pass through us and we create, we feel part of the whole. We let go of our producing self, and that makes our identification with that self diluted a little.

The paradox of productivity within creativity is that it is activated, against all odds, when we let go of the need to produce. The most basic example that any human has experienced is when we take a break and focus our attention on other activities, once we return to our work the mind is more agile and ideas flow easily.

But this natural productivity does not last forever and is partly the result of the moment when both our body and our mind are rested. The truth is that there is no magic trick to do everything in 2 seconds and perfectly. The only thing we can hope for is to be aware of our expectations and try to bring a little respect for ourselves.

Creativity needs spaces in which to expand and feel free, exploiting it only leads us to block ourselves, being awake to our emotions helps us to identify when we are reaching a saturation limit in order to stop it before it is too late. Take some time, focus our attention on other things and release the tension of what we are doing.

In this case, as in many others, the only truth is that self-knowledge is power, the more we know ourselves, the easier everything will be, if we know what situations or things activate us, which ones demotivate us, what tools help us connect or what we can do in situations of saturation to return us to our center, we will know how to give ourselves what we need.

The most important thing is to respond to our inner voice and not to the expectations that others have of us, it is our path and ours are the consequences, for better or for worse, only we have the answers.

All of this is very easy to forget, but remembering is part of the game. And I know that I will not be the only one who, seeing ourselves immersed in the chaos in which we have lived for almost three years, realises that the time has come to allow ourself to be as multidimensional as possible, to leave behind all the labels and filters of I am to whom we were linked in the past and that we needed to sustain our persona, to begin to Be only for the pleasure of Being and existing, and thus letting the rest of the things that happen to us be only logical consequences of our existence.

  “¿Me contradigo? Muy bien, entonces, me contradigo;
soy inmenso, contengo multitudes”
- Walt Whitman
