“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
Cart GustavJung

In moments of uncertainty it is normal to feel that we lose control.

Lately, I been thinking about the beginnings of my career as an independent artist. In those days I had already exhibited in some places, and I had experience my first interviews, the Barcelona scene had opened the door for me and I used to collaborate in all the projects and events that I could, but even doing all that stuff I didn’t had any money and in my mind the only possible way of sustaining myself through art creation was joining a gallery.

After being rejected for various awards and galleries. It became very clear to me that there was no space for my work both in the institutional circuit and in contemporary galleries.

This reduced my chances to the extreme and for a time I moved from one place to another without knowing which way to go, following the tide and trying to imitate the path of others to see if I could get the same results.

It was not until I found myself in a financial bind that I began to listen to myself and follow my own path, taking the step to start managing myself and selling my own work.

Until that moment I felt ashamed just thinking about the possibility of having to advertise and manage myself. I was taught that I would not be an artist until a gallery owner decided it and so far no one had done it.

My first individual exhibition was in a place that someone offer me in exchange for an art piece. It was a ground floor in the Gothic quarter in Barcelona, the owner used it as a warehouse so before the exhibition I spent a week emptying it and hiding everything. At that time the events and exhibitions always had sponsors to offer food and drinks. I had no sponsors of any kind but I had the help of several of my friends who volunteered to prepare sangria and serve the cheapest and most horrible wine we could find.

I had noticed that in the collective exhibitions in which I had participated, press releases were sent to publicise the event, so I asked my sister to write a text, we sent it everywhere and several magazines agreed to publish it.

The exhibition was a success but I didn't sell anything because it never occurred to me to set prices, people asked me for business cards and I remember saying that they were gone but the truth is that it had never occurred to me to make them in first place.

The memories of all that faith in nothing and taking risks without any exact purpose are what remind me of the root from which we create. At that time I just wanted an opportunity to show my work in a space and to communicate through it, and I got it.

The first phases of a change are always perceived as an abyss, the most interesting emerges when we look with perspective. Years later these moments seem like some of the best of our lives. Sometimes because the chaos and discomfort of not having control make them more intense, other times because the transformative factor of the experience and the feeling of starting over as if on a blank canvas is liberating.

These moments are the ones that bring with them the deepest spiritual lessons.

Of course this is not always brings comfort but it seems to be true, there is a lesson inscribed there, and that is that we better learn to detach ourselves in times of chaos and trust in the mystery of life.

By personifying ourselves with the chaos that surrounds us, we turn it into “our” drama, into “our” pain, and neither drama, nor pain, nor anxiety are things that can be possessed, they are emotions, situations or conditions that happen to us but they are neither ours nor define us.

If we look closely at the technical meanings of our drama we may be surprised. For example, the word emotion comes from the Latin emotio which in turn derives from the verb emovere, movere means to move or transfer and the prefix e- means to remove, change places, emotions take us out of the place where we were and move us to another, they are in motion, they pass through us but they do not define us or our character, they only condition it until another thing changes us again.

Now tell me if this isn't liberating? Instead of envisioning everything as our own and trying to own our emotion, instead of that allow ourselves to see, understand, listen, and then let go, waiting for the next thing we feel.

We have the habit of seeing ourselves with power and authority over our senses and emotions but we are more like windmills affected by the conditions that surround us. Everything impacts us to a greater or lesser extent even (specially) when we try to make an effort not to be so.

What nature asks of us is resilience and faith in the mystery that surrounds us, to become aware of how extraordinary our existence is, to allow ourselves to see beyond the educational veils and the demands of the system until we connect with the most basic of our being.

Saying goodbye to everything known and welcome what we need to know, without fear, without attachment and without expectation, willing to evolve with each step.
